Counseling / Therapy in English for Expats in Lisbon
I provide adult individual psychotherapy and couples therapy for expats. Having had the experience of living abroad and getting to know, both in my personal and professional life, people from many cultures, nationalities, religions and ethnicity, I can identify and understand some of the challenges that expats face, sometimes, on top of other issues that they might be struggling with. When one arrives to a new country it’s easy to feel lonely, sometimes somewhat lost and not really sure where to go for support. Therefore, it can be useful to have a space where the individual or the couple can make sense of their thoughts and feelings about living in a new country and a in a new culture. In terms of a couple, sometimes each member of the couple struggles with different issues and have coping strategies that might lead to difficulties in communicating and conflict, exploring gender roles can also be useful.
I intend to create a confidential and non-judgemental space where individuals can reflect, improve their self-knowledge and think about solutions or a different position to face life challenges. I believe in a resilience-based approach where people can feel better about themselves, identify and use their strengths to help them to be creative defining new ideas to their problems.
I can help with issues such as anxiety, trauma, addictions, anger problems, depression, low self-esteem, identity, relationship difficulties, life transitions such as starting a family, retirement, amongst others. I use an integrative approach depending on the issue presented and what the person or couple feels most comfortable with. We might need to explore the past, if we think it’s influencing the present. We might stay in the present and explore different feelings, needs and dilemmas, if this is what the person or the couple is struggling with or we might define more specific goals and strategies and develop new skills to deal with problems.
