Psychotherapy for Addictions
I provide adult individual psychotherapy for people who are affected by addiction. These addictions might present in different forms: abuse of substances, gambling, compulsive shopping or affairs.
Over the years I have found that, at times, it’s difficult for people to stay with some emotions, particularly sadness, loneliness, feelings of worthlessness, anxiety, amongst others. Therefore, they tend to act them out in the ways described above. During therapy, we work towards developing an ability to stay with these emotions; I also help the individuals to feel more connected with their body. I usually integrate mindfulness ideas and the EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) model. I believe in a resilience-based approach where people can feel better about themselves, identify and use their strengths to help them to be creative defining new ideas to their problems.
Individuals I work with may also be involved with AA or other support groups, which have proved to be helpful.
